My work examines the often tenuous connection between self and body, especially through the lenses of disability, gender, and trauma. Through painting, printmaking, and textiles, I aim to distill the spiritual from the physical, seeking to express identity as a fluid, living form distinct from the anatomical. I question if we are our bodies, and, if not, how we can visually represent the self.
Adrien Hawke is a painter, printmaker, and textile artist. He finds inspiration in his experiences wandering the woods of New England and north-central Georgia, where he grew up, his exploration of spirituality after a disabling near-death experience, and a longtime love of historical American folk art and craft traditions. Adrien is currently based in Central Massachusetts where he lives with his partner, their pet lizard (Peggy), and their two dogs (River and Juniper).
